Chiyo Mihama, or just Chiyo-chan, is a very intelligent young girl who skipped five grades to the tenth grade. She is also very wealthy. Though het classmates often envy her for het intelligence and wealth she is too cute to dislike, Osaka is obsessed with her pigtails.

Sakaki is a tall, quiet, atlethic, wells-shaped girl, but looks can be decieving. She is very uncomfortable with her looks and she has no interest in sports. She secretly adores all things cute espescially cats. Unfortunately for her cats do not like her. One cat in particular aims to make her miserable, he is referred to in the story as 'Kamineko' roughly meaning 'dangerous cat'. Watch on youtube Eventually she does find a cat that likes her: Maya (referred to as Pika-Pika Mew Mew by Osaka).

Tomo Takino is a very energetic girl. She will often act impulsively and competetively, while she is actually not very atlethic or bright. At one point in the story Chiyo has to find a 'baka' and decides to bring Tomo. (lefthand side of the picture)

Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara is the calmest, most mature girl in the group. She both Tomo's friend as her direct opposite. Yet she too has her problem, she is troubled with her weight and tries various diets throughout the story. (righthand side of the picture)

Ayumu "Osaka' Kasuga is a transfer student from Osaka. Eventhough her behaviour is very different from a 'typical Osakan', Tomo quickly nicknames her Osaka and the class copies her. Even the teachers do not remember her real name after a while. When she checks the lists for her homeroom she thinks she is not on it, but she is, only named as Osaka. She is very prone to daydreaming, espescially about Chiyo's pigtails and 'Chiyo's father'. She is, however also very good at solving a particular type of riddles: what was the tallest mountain before the mount everest was discovered?

Kagura gets in Yakari's class in the second year, Yakaru picked her to win the athletics competition. She is a nice girl and a talented athlete. She consideres Sakaki her rival because of her natural atlethic abilities.

Yukari Tanizaki is the girls' english and homeroom teacher. She has a very casual and informal relationship with her class (she also joins them on their holiday each year). She can be moody and impulsive. She wants to show Nyamo that she is a superior teacher. Her driving skills are worse than terrible. (left hand side of picture) Watch on youtube Nyamo is the girl's PE teacher. She is a nicer persoon than Yukari, and less impulsive. She is actually called Minamo Kurosawa, but Yukari always calls her Nyamo. (righthand side of picture)

Kimura is a male teacher at the girls' school. He does not hide that he became a teacher to look at teenage girls. He is actually married to a beautiful woman.

Kaorin has a crush on Sakaki and goes through a lot of trouble to get her attention. Sakaki is completely oblivious to her feelings. Mr. Kimura develops a particular interrest in Kaorin.
